The word legendary certainly applies to Lydia Pense and Cold Blood who have forged their own specific brand of funk, soul and R&B, which has come to be known as East Bay Grease. Pense who pioneered the women's rock movement will be joined by Cold Blood, the seven-piece ensemble for a much anticipated appearance at The Yale on Sunday, September 19.
Deemed a better vocalist than Janis Joplin, Pense can still shout like a 60's soul diva and purr a slow blues tune with spine-tingling subtlety. Cold Blood features veteran San Francisco Bay Area musicians who have performed together for approximately 20 years including Steve Dunne (guitar), Steve Salinas (keyboards), Rich Armstrong (horns), Rob Zuckerman (horns), Evan Palmerston (bass), and Donny Baldwin (drums). These stellar performers have shared the stage with music greats such as Boz Skaggs, Elvin Bishop, Starship, Thomas Dolby, Eddie Money, Michelle Shocked, and Albert Collins. Together, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood continues to mesh old and new school R&B into something unique that doesn't have a label.
Pense maintains the chops with the patina of a seasoned veteran who's seen and done it all. On any given night, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood power through historic essentials such as "You Got Me Hummin'," "I Just Want To Make Love To You," "I'm A Good Woman," and "Down to the Bone." The band's 2008 recording LIVE BLOOD shows the world that Pense is a force to be reckoned with. This live album captures the band in mid-tour perfection during the Sunbanks Rhythm and Blues Festival in Washington State. This raucous recording features Lydia Pense and Cold Blood powering through some of their most recognized tunes including the R&B masterpiece "Can't Take It (Don't Give A Damn)," written by the great Lavelle White.
This performance is presented by The Canadian Pacific Blues Society. Yale VIP passes not accepted for this performance.
